I stopped reading the Guardian a week or so ago, so that piece of nonsense passed me by.

The Guardian is a bit peculier. It produces good environmental articles, even doomers get published now and again, and yet, it betrays it's neo-liberal addiction every now and then with articles like this.

So I did a quick google AI.

There are 2.5 billion houses, flats and apartments in the world.

145 million of them don't have electricity.

925 million have aircon.

To retrofit the remainder with aircon would require, get this:

31.5 million tonnes of steel, 15.75 million tonnes of aluminium, 11.03 million tonnes of copper, and 78,750 tonnes of rare earth elements.

To mine, refine, produce and transport all those aircon units would release an estimated 344 million tonnes of carbon. That doesn't include ongoing maintenance and powering of the aircon units, which adds 1046 million tonnes of carbon a year, as most would be powered by fossil fuels as it currently stands.

To run all those extra air con units would require 2,520 Terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity every single year, increasing current usage by 10%.

To buy all those aircon units would cost over $1 trillion, and you can bet your last dollar that the neo-liberal death cult is not going to give each house an aircon unit for free. So we'd have to borrow a net $1.02 trillion dollars, then be saddled with the debt forever.

Okay, so that is AI and the numbers could be well out be an order of magnitude, but I think we get the picture. I did that in ten minutes. The editor of The Guardian could have done the same.

So it wouldn't be about protecting the people from climate change, it would be about enriching the owners of air conditioning builders and distributors, and enslaving the masses with even more debt. I bet I know where this guy's shares portfolio is.

I read that same guardian article and concluded that Eduardo Porter is ecologically clueless.
