Thanks Bill, for having the courage to say 'we are hooped' and not proffer 'solutions'. We have all been conditioned to believe that somehow 8 billion humans, if 'properly' informed, and with the appropriate 'leadership', will rationally, coherently and magically self-organize to 'solve' any predicament. We believe that even though there is no evidence that that has ever happened.

As John Gray wrote in Straw Dogs: “The destruction of the natural world is not the result of global capitalism, industrialization, Western civilization, or any flaw in human institutions. It is a consequence of the evolutionary success of an exceptionally rapacious primate... The mass of mankind is ruled not by its own intermittent moral sensations, still less by self-interest, but by the needs of the moment. It seems fated to wreck the balance of life on Earth — and thereby to be the agent of its own destruction. What could be more hopeless than placing the Earth in the charge of this exceptionally destructive species?"

And in any case, there's pretty compelling evidence that we have no 'free will' to do anything even if we were somehow able to change everyone's mind to agree on what needs 'doing'. Science demonstrates quite conclusively that all our behaviour is conditioned by our biology and our culture — it is already 'determined' (though not predictable or 'determinable').

Best we can hope for, I think, is to come to accept our bewildered animal nature and the inevitable and accelerating collapse of our well-intentioned 'civilization', and try to live our lives as fully and joyfully as the circumstances of each moment allow us. We may be called 'doomers' now, but eventually I think we'll be understood to be realists, and, hopefully, 'joyful pessimists'.

Many thanks, Tristan -- I appreciate the boost and hope you are correct that the neo-Malthusian (I've been called much worse) trope is finally dissolving.
